Yankees interested in star outfielder they’d return to infield

The New York Yankees could make a few trades to improve the roster before July 30′s trade deadline — and one possibility would be a blockbuster.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yankees have discussed Miami Marlins outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. as a potential trade option, but the extent of the interest is unknown.

Before the 2023 season, the Miami Marlins moved Chisholm from second base to center field. If he joins the Yankees, Heyman believes that he will return to the infield.

Chisholm still has over two years of team control before he’s a free agent. He is making $2.625 million this season. The Yankees would have to offer a strong package to acquire him because of his age (26), contract and upside.

At one point, Chisholm was considered one of baseball’s top emerging infielders. But his performance has been mixed.

In 2022, Chisholm was voted to the All-Star game after he hit 254/.324/.535 over his first 60 games. His breakout season was cut short after suffering a stress fracture in his back. During the last two seasons, he has hit .253/.314/.436 with 31 home runs over 755 plate appearances. It has been worth a 102 OPS+.

Chisholm is putting together a solid 2024 season. He has hit .255/.324/.419 with 12 home runs and a 104 OPS+ through 77 plate appearances. He has 18 stolen bases.

With Anthony Volpe locked into shortstop, perhaps the Yankees would think of putting Chisholm at second base to replace the struggling Gleyber Torres or third base for the first time to spell the underperforming DJ LeMahieu.

In his career, Chisholm has played 183 games in center field, 164 games at second base and 46 at shortstop.
