Wheel on American Airlines Boeing plane bursts into flames just ahead of takeoff

An American Airlines Boeing 737 flight was forced to abort after one of its wheels began to smoke — and exploded — just as the plane was about to take off from a Florida airport Wednesday.

Footage posted on YouTube by plane spotter Captain Steven Markovich shows the American Airlines aircraft gaining speed on the runway at Tampa International Airport when its right tire suddenly begins to smoke, eventually bursting into flames.

“A blown tire,” Markovich yells in the video. “Emergency, emergency, emergency. They’re on fire!”

Voices over the radio can be heard saying “Abort” and “We’ve got a blown tire” as a steady stream of smoke can be seen billowing out from the plane’s right landing gear.

Other video footage shows airport firefighters extinguishing the flames.

The American Airlines Flight 590 was set to take off from Tampa around 7:50 a.m. for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Arizona, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the runway shortly before 8 a.m., Tampa International Airport spokesman CJ Johnson said.

There were 174 passengers and six crew members aboard the plane at the time of the incident. Everyone was taken from the plane and bused to the terminal, American Airlines spokesman Alfredo Garduño said.

No injuries were reported.

After being taken back inside the airport, passengers were moved to a replacement flight.

Other flight operations at Tampa International Airport weren’t affected, Johnson added.

The FAA is investigating the incident.
