USMNT announces training camp roster ahead of Copa America

The U.S. men’s national team training camp roster ahead of the Copa America is filled with veterans of the 2022 World Cup, a reminder of the continuity and core of a group that has heavy expectations around it in this cycle — including for both the summer’s tournament and the 2026 World Cup in two years.

The roster has 18 players who were a part of the tournament in Qatar two years ago, including stars Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams, Gio Reyna and Tim Weah.

Gregg Berhalter also opted for experience down the depth chart, however, most notably with goalkeeper Sean Johnson and right back Shaq Moore. That hints that this summer’s Olympic tournament likely influenced this roster for younger players who are on the fringe of this U.S. team, including left winger Kevin Paredes, goalkeeper Patrick Schulte and right back Bryan Reynolds. Moore essentially steps into the roster spot vacated by starter Sergiño Dest after Dest suffered a torn ACL during training with PSV a few weeks ago.

The roster will have an average age of 25 years, 202 days as of the first day of training on May 29.

Interestingly, Berhalter also included four strikers in this 27-man squad: Ricardo Pepi, Folarin Balogun and World Cup veterans Josh Sargent and Haji Wright. Wright’s ability to play as a winger likely influenced the ability to include all four players.

The Copa America roster can include just 26 players, so one player from the friendlies against Colombia on June 8 and Brazil on June 12 will not make the squad for the summer tournament. The announcement of that final roster will be made sometime after the Brazil friendly.

Those friendlies will present huge tests for the U.S. The U.S. are facing the two teams against which they have the longest winless streaks in program history: Brazil (11 games) and Colombia (seven games).

Should they both appear in one of the June friendlies, Malik and Timmy Tillman would become the ninth set of brothers to play for the USMNT in the same match, and the first since Ken and Steve Snow against Costa Rica on June 14, 1988. The Tillmans became the 10th set of brothers to appear for the USMNT upon Timmy’s debut this past January against Slovenia.
