Traveling for Memorial Day weekend? Here are the best and worst times to travel

The holiday weekend travel rush starts today as the unofficial start to summer kicks off this Memorial Day weekend. And if you’re planning on hitting the road for the holiday weekend, anticipate traffic.

According to AAA, this year is the second highest Memorial Day holiday travel forecast since the organization began tracking in 2000. AAA projects more than a million New Jersey residents will travel at least 50 miles from now until Monday — more than 90% by car.

Best and worst times to travel on the roads

AAA says the best time to travel by car today is before 11 a.m. and after 7 p.m. The worst time to travel today is from noon to 6 p.m.

Travelers can expect another busy traffic day on Friday with peak travel times from noon to 7 p.m.

In addition to the regular holiday travel rush, some security lanes at Newark Liberty International Airport’s Terminal B have been shut down as improvements are made. Travelers are being asked to arrive three hours before their flight.
