Travel Tips for a Healthier Summer
The answer is short and simple: Plan ahead and make it a priority.
Regardless if you’re traveling for work or for pleasure, eating nutritious foods and completing workouts in can be more exciting than you may think. Before you leave for your trip, be sure to do some light research about the surrounding area where you’re staying and above all, have fun with it!
Befriend Google
Locate farm stands, markets and outdoor parks within walking distance from your destination. Chances are, if you’re less than a mile from these healthy hotspots motivating yourself to get there won’t be as challenging. Visiting Boothbay? There are plenty of preserves to hike in our coastal community. From Ovens Mouth to Penny Lake, you’ll have your choice of trails to trek in Boothbay, Southport and beyond! All free of charge and open year-round. Be sure to check the Boothbay Region Land Trust website for more information.
Get a Discount
Before heading out on vacation, I recommend perusing different discount sites for possible deals on fitness studios, restaurants and even spas. Sites like Groupon and Guilt City traditionally offer deep discounts on everything from massages to personal training sessions, juice cleanses to yoga memberships. And while most of these deals are based on companies in major cities, you’d be surprised to find hidden deals in more remote destinations by scrolling social media. Day passes to local gyms – such as the YMCA – are always a great way to try out a facility without the commitment. Take a fitness class, use the pool or walk the track; it’s about moving your body without breaking the bank.
After all, who doesn’t love to save a few bucks?
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Ever feel thirsty after a full day of traveling? Flying in particular causes much dehydration, which can lead to bloating, fatigue and an overall sense of blah.
Nix this feeling and amp up your energy by steering clear of sodas, coffee, alcohol and salty snacks. Instead — at least for the days of travel — focus on upping your intake of water, fresh fruits and veggies. If you’re already feeling dehydrated, look towards electrolytes for a boost. Liquid IV, Ultima and LMNT are all great options that pack a punch without the risk of too much added sugar.
However you choose to stay healthy this summer, remember, you’ll most likely be off of your routine. At the end of the day, aim to get your steps in, incorporate healthy options at every meal and catch some zzz’s. If you make it to that beachfront yoga class, namaste! It’s a sun salutation you’ll be speaking about long after you’ve returned home from your trip.
