These 5 maps show how to travel from Logan Airport during Sumner Tunnel closure

Those leaving Boston Logan Airport are going to have to find alternative routes as Sumner Tunnel is closed for a month.

The tunnel is closed for renovations until Aug. 5. It typically carries traffic under Boston Harbor and connects East Boston and Logan Airport to downtown Boston.

Traffic will be diverted as a result for the next month, affecting travelers coming from Logan Airport or East Boston to Boston.

But there are wrong ways to try to avoid traffic, the Chelsea Police Department warned.

“Chelsea is NOT a cut-through! Expect long delays, angry honks, and possibly a traffic jam that rivals your worst nightmare,” the department posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Save yourself the trouble and find an alternate route!”

See below for 5 maps by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation showing how to get around the Sumner Tunnel closure and to and from the airport.

East Boston to downtown

Drivers from East Boston going to downtown will be rerouted to I-90/Ted Williams Tunnel via Bennington Street and onto I-93.

Route 145 exit closed

MassDOT warns that when the Route 145 (Bennington Street) exit is closed, follow the local East Boston detour. “Message boards and signs near the entrance of the Ted Williams Tunnel will guide residents through the route,” it said on its website.
