The Way Angelina Jolie’s Daughter Shiloh Reportedly Handled Her Name Change Proves How Serious She Was

If you thought Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter Shiloh dropping “Pitt” from her last name was part of a ploy in her parent’s contentious divorce, you couldn’t be more wrong. According to new sources, the decision to legally change her name was entirely hers — and a drastic move she reportedly made proves how serious she is about it.

ICYMI, Shiloh filed with a court to drop “Pitt” from her last name on her 18th birthday on May 27, making her the first of Jolie and Pitt’s six kids to legally do this. Now, insiders say it was all her idea.

“Shiloh hired her own lawyer and paid for it herself, so Angie doesn’t know and can’t speak for it,” a source told Entertainment Tonight on Saturday. (Another source confirmed this detail to PEOPLE as well.) However, the Maleficent star may have indirectly influenced her daughter, as she herself dropped her last name. According to ET, Jolie was originally born Angelina Jolie Voight, but after “a long estrangement” from her dad Jon Voight, she petitioned the court to drop Voight from her name, which was granted in 2002.

Pitt and Jolie were married in 2014 and split in 2016 after an alleged altercation on a flight involving their kids. They have been in a legal battle since, and their kids — including Maddox, 22, Pax, 20, Zahara, 19, 15-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox, and Shiloh — are allegedly picking sides. An insider told Life & Style in April, “The siblings do get into arguments about their parents.”

The source added, “While Maddox, Pax, Zahara and Vivienne are all adamantly on Team Angie, Shiloh and Knox continue to talk to their dad. The other kids don’t understand their connection to Brad. They try to persuade them to switch sides, and it causes a lot of tension.” Considering Shiloh’s name change, it could be that she’s changed her mind about her dad.

In addition to Shiloh, Zahara and Vivienne (who worked on the play The Outsiders with her mom) both publicly dropped “Pitt” from her last name as well. Maddox reportedly testified in court against his dad and Pax ripped him apart on social media. It will be interesting to see what Vivienne and Knox will do once they are old enough to make their own legal decisions as well.

Angelina Jolie is a mom of six — and the way she dotes on her kids is adorable!
