The Perfect Dark Replacement Confirmed By Prime Video’s Returning Time Travel Show

Although Amazon Prime Video’s Outer Range couldn’t seem more different from Netflix’s German sci-fi series, Dark, the second season of the sci-fi Western has proven that the shows may be more alike than previously thought, and more than that, Outer Range may be a perfect replacement for Dark. First released in 2022, Outer Range tells the story of the Abbotts, ranchers who are struggling with the disappearance of their daughter-in-law just as their neighbors, the Tillersons, make a play for their land. But the biggest shock of all is the black void that has just opened in the Abbotts’ pasture.

On the other hand, Dark first premiered in 2017 on Netflix. It tells the story of four families in a small German town who are torn apart after children begin to go missing and a time-bending wormhole begins unraveling their complicated pasts and relationships.Dark ran for three seasons, up until June 2020. During that time, the sci-fi series earned notable acclaim, earning a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, and becoming one of Netflix’s most popular foreign language series. Its good reviews are hard to beat, but recently, it seems as though Outer Range season 2’s ending might have a chance.

Outer Range Season 2 Confirms It’s Dark’s Perfect Replacement

Similar time travel situations

In the first season of Outer Range, the Abbotts discover that there is a strange hole on their property, and when they enter it, they can move through time. This is not much different from Dark, wherein a similar wormhole has opened underneath the site of a nuclear plant. However, Outer Range season 2 makes the comparisons even stronger by including characters meeting younger versions of their parents in the past and characters replacing themselves in the timeline. Now, Outer Range and Dark are inseparable, with the former adding a Western American twist to the latter.

In Outer Range season 2, Perry resides in the 1980s, decades from his true timeline, but eventually reenters the Hole and returns to present day. He quickly realizes that he has returned days earlier than when he went in, and stops himself from killing Trevor. However, in doing this, his past self gets killed, and Perry must replace himself, leading to Perry’s big time travel twist. Additionally, Autumn pushes Amy into the Hole, sending her to the future where she remembers nothing but the name Autumn, leading her to believe that she is Autumn and setting Autumn’s timeline into motion.

What Prime Video’s Outer Range Does Differently From Netflix’s Dark

Outer Range offers a different ambiance

Despite all the similarities shared between Outer Range and Dark, the two shows do have their differences as well. First and foremost, Outer Range has a much more American ambiance, and in particular, it mixes sci-fi with a classic Western setting, making it a bit different from Dark’s German forest. Furthermore, Outer Range seems to have a situation that could expand far past the families it is affecting now. While Dark’s black hole was well-hidden, almost meant for its specific families, Outer Range has the potential to make the wormhole a much bigger problem.

The two have very similar premises, but their execution differs. In this way, audiences can enjoy the same premise going in wildly different directions and with incredibly different atmospheres. All episodes of Outer Range season 2 are currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
