The 5 Best City Hotels in Mexico, According to Travel + Leisure Readers
Mexico City and San Miguel de Allende are high on this year’s list of top cities in the world in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards survey. Famous for their cultural richness, architectural gems, inspiring culinary scene, and gorgeous hotels, it’s little surprise that the top five city hotels in Mexico are in these two dynamic cities.
How Voting Works
Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Over 186,000 T+L readers completed the 2024 survey. A total of more than 700,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).
Hotels were classified as either resort hotel, city hotel, inn, or safari lodge based on their location and amenities, and they were specifically rated on the criteria below:
- Rooms/facilities
- Location
- Service
- Food
- Value
For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.
What Readers Loved
Mexico City continues to be a T+L favorite, consistently nabbing a spot on the World’s Best list year after year. This year, three Mexico City hotels made it to the list, including the intimate hotel Colima 71 in the Roma Norte district, which took the No. 4 spot. “It is a must for those who love art, architecture, and design situated in one of the nicest cultural neighborhoods,” wrote one reader. The other two Mexico City hotels are The Ritz-Carlton, Mexico City (No. 3) and Four Seasons Hotel Mexico City (No. 5).
The top two spots on this year’s list were claimed by hotels in San Miguel de Allende — T+L readers’ No. 1 city in the world of 2024. Casa de Sierra Nevada, A Belmond Hotel, San Miguel de Allende, slipped to No. 2 this year, but still received praise from readers: “The hotel is centrally located, the service is outstanding, the rooms are exquisite, and the view from Tunki Rooftop is extraordinary.”
Ultimately, it was Rosewood San Miguel de Allende that stole the hearts of readers this year. Read on to see why.
The Winner
Rosewood San Miguel de Allende
“A very special hotel located in the heart of San Miguel, the restaurants and views are spectacular. The property is wonderful for both families or couples,” summed up one reader who helped secure this San Miguel de Allende icon the top spot. Located in Zona Centro, the hotel is within walking distance to the Jardin Allende, Parque Benito Juárez, and the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel. And when it comes to accommodations, the 67 rooms, suites, and private residences are reminiscent of a historic hacienda, with hand-carved wood and beamed ceilings, as well as French windows that open to terraces.
The hotel’s unique on- and off-site offerings are what take service over the top. Guests can immerse themselves in the local culture with cooking classes and tequila tastings, as well as workshops like Mojigangas workshops and painting classes. At the end of a day exploring, indulge in a cocktail in the moody, elegant 1826 Tequila Bar or drink in the sweeping views of San Miguel’s rooftops from Luna Rooftop.
One reader called it the “best hotel in Mexico,” stating “there’s nothing like it. I truly loved everything starting with the food, but the real beauty of this hotel is the aesthetic of it.”
