The 15 Best Hotels in New York City of 2024, According to Travel + Leisure Readers
Start spreading the news: New York is still king when it comes to jaw-dropping travel experiences. The city that never sleeps offers everything a traveler can ever want, including proximity to world-class museums, dining, and some of the most iconic stays in the world. Speaking of the latter, this year’s top hotels are centrally located and combine grandeur with convenience, making a stay in New York one to remember.
How Voting Works
Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Over 186,000 T+L readers completed the 2024 survey. A total of more than 700,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).
Hotels were classified as either resort hotel, city hotel, inn, or safari lodge based on their location and amenities, and they were specifically rated on the criteria below:
- Rooms/facilities
- Location
- Service
- Food
- Value
For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.
What Readers Loved
Although readers didn’t necessarily agree on a single neighborhood in New York, they did see eye to eye on one thing: They all want to stay in the borough of Manhattan. This year’s list retains many of its picks from last year, like The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel (staying at No. 4), Baccarat Hotel New York (No. 11 this year, down from No. 7), The Roxy Hotel (up to No. 3 from No. 10), and the iconic Plaza, a Fairmont Managed Hotel (down one slot to No. 12).
The winner, though, was a newcomer — Virgin Hotels New York — making a bold appearance in the No. 1 slot.
The Winner
Virgin Hotels New York
This new addition to the list is also a new addition to New York City. Virgin Hotels New York, a 460-room property, opened its doors in 2023 in the NoMad neighborhood. With an outdoor pool club, multiple meeting spaces, and a combined dining and cocktail venue, the property delivers multiple experiences for out-of-town guests. One guest found it “sleek, classy, stylish, sexy,” while another raved about the food. “Hotel restaurant/bar has amazing food, especially that shrimp toast,” the T+L reader wrote.
