Texas Economy Growing Jobs Fastest In The Nation

The state of Texas has added jobs at a faster rate over the past 12 months than the nation as a whole, Governor Abbott recently announced.

In May 2024, Texas marked its 10th consecutive month of record-high job levels, accompanied by new peaks in the number of employed Texans and the state’s civilian labor force, extending this trend for the past five months. Texas also broke all previous records for total jobs, the number of Texans working, and the size of the state’s labor force.

May employment data released by the Texas Workforce Commission highlights several significant milestones for the state. Texas reached an all-time high in its labor force, with a record 15,262,600 individuals. The number of Texans working, including the self-employed, also hit a new peak at 14,655,700.

“Texas is where the future is building,” said Gov. Abbott in a statement. “That is why Texas continues to grow jobs and outperform the nation in annual job growth. With America’s best business climate, our strong and growing workforce and an unwavering focus on investing for the future, we see more Texas businesses innovating and more hardworking Texans forging a path to prosperity.”

Texas also achieved a record total of 14,195,600 jobs after adding 41,800 non-farm jobs in May alone. Over the past year, from May 2023 to May 2024, the state added 316,700 jobs, reflecting a growth rate of 2.3%, which surpasses the national rate by half a point. May marked the 47th month of job growth in the last 49 months for Texas. Since Abbott took office, the state added nearly 2.4 million jobs by May 2024.

“Texas is where today’s products are made and where tomorrow’s technologies are born,” Gov. Abbott said. “We will continue to lead the nation as we build a bigger, better Texas for decades to come.”
