Team USA Basketball Showcase: Highlights from US vs. Australia exhibition game

play

Team USA Basketball fought off a late comeback attempt from Australia to win its second exhibition game together as the team continues its pre-Olympics showcase schedule.

The United States defeated Canada on Wednesday, 86-72, in the first game of the USA Basketball Showcase in Las Vegas. They defeated the Australian Boomers, 98-92, on Monday in a game that got close late.

Australia exposed Team USA’s flaws throughout the fourth quarter with a strong defensive effort that forced bad turnovers and missed shots. But clutch shooting down the stretch from Tyrese Haliburton and Devin Booker kept the United States ahead just enough to win the game.

In all, the Team USA roster will have played five games together during the showcase prior to the start of the 2024 Paris Olympics. After its two games in Abu Dhabi, the team will play two more games in London before playing its first group stage game of the Olympics on July 28.

Here’s how Team USA defeated Australia in the pre-Olympics tune-up game.

The United States takes on Serbia in Abu Dhabi for its third USA Basketball Showcase exhibition game on Wednesday, July 17. The game starts at noon ET and will be aired on FS1.

Clutch free-throw shooting from Booker kept the U.S. ahead despite the late comeback attempt from Australia. Team USA wins its second game of the USA Basketball Showcase and will stay in Abu Dhabi to play Serbia on Wednesday.

Landale got a quick basket on an inbound play and converted the and-one for his 20th point of the game after a foul. It cut Australia’s deficit to four points with only seconds left.

As Australia continued to snap at the heels of the Americans, Booker hit a mid-range jumper with 30 seconds left to give Team USA a nine-point lead.

The Indiana Pacers’ guard knocks down a corner 3-pointer to give Team USA some breathing room after the Americans collectively had missed their last seven shots. He hit the same shot one possession later to build the U.S. lead up to 12 points. They now lead 92-81.

Thanks to more turnovers and missed shots from the United States, Australia has cut into their deficit significantly. Team USA’s lead is down to six points. The Americans lead, 86-80, with five minutes remaining.

With 10 minutes left to play, the United States lead Australia 76-61. The five on the floor to start the fourth quarter are Curry, Edwards, Tatum, James and Davis.

Australia has built a 14-2 run on the backs of several consecutive possessions with a turnover by Team USA. The team is up to 12 turnovers with three minutes left in the third quarter.

The United States continues to roll with their rotation of two, five-man lineups throughout the game: Curry, Edwards, Tatum, James and Embiid; and Holiday, Booker, Haliburton, Davis and Adebayo.

White, who joined Team USA late, still has not played as the third quarter winds down and the United States leads Australia, 67-53.

Team USA lead the Boomers 53-37 through 20 minutes of play at Etihad Arena.

The United States’ starting center pulled up from the top of the key and drained a 3-pointer, adding on to Team USA’s big lead and continuing its run of success from beyond the arc.

Seven minutes into the second quarter, United States players are 11/11 from the free-throw line. Team USA leads, 46-30.

Australia ate away at the Americans’ lead nearly halfway through the second quarter with a 7-0 run, but Curry drilled a deep 3-pointer to get the United States back on the board.

Curry, Edwards, Tatum, James and Embiid are back out on the floor for Team USA early in the second quarter.

The United States have put themselves up 32-21 after the first 10 minutes of action.

Halfway through the first quarter, Tyrese Haliburton, Bam Adebayo, Anthony Davis, Jrue Holiday and Devin Booker all enter the game.

Edwards leads both teams with 11 points through the first five minutes of the game, including a 3/3 mark on 3-point attempts and 4/4 mark from the field.

Three minutes into the first quarter, LeBron James and Anthony Edwards are both 2/2 from 3-point range.
