Taylor Swift split questions reportedly left Joe Alwyn ‘depressed and emotionally drained’
Joe Alwyn only spoke out about his split from Taylor Swift because he was “emotionally drained” by the persistent questions and commentary surrounding their split.
An insider told the Daily Mail Monday that the British actor, 33, broke his silence during an interview with the Times in hopes everyone would “move on” from their six-year relationship for good.
“Joe wanted to get this over with once and for all so he can move forward with his life and his career,” the source said.
“He never wanted to say anything and was hoping it would all blow over, but it hasn’t,” they continued. “Taylor has made a fortune off their breakup by forming an entire album around it. Meanwhile, he has been cast as ‘Taylor’s ex.’”
The exes split in early 2023 and fans believe several songs — such as “So Long, London,” “The Black Dog” and “How Did It End?” — on Swift’s most recent album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” detail their breakup.
However, many other tracks are rumored to be about the 34-year-old’s ill-fated fling with Matty Healy and her romance with NFL star Travis Kelce.
While there reportedly isn’t any bad blood between the “Fortnight” singer and Alwyn, he would like her to understand how impactful her lyrics can be, the source said.
“He wishes her no ill will, but he also needed her to know that appearing to address their relationship without confirming who she is singing about can have a lasting and hurtful effect on the people/ men involved,” they said.
Although Alwyn wished to avoid discussing their breakup altogether, he reportedly felt like “all people wanted to ask him about” was Swift during the promotional tour for his new film, “Kinds of Kindness.”
“He cannot go anywhere without being asked about Taylor,” the insider insisted.
“He wants to be asked about his films, not about Taylor,” they added, noting that it “became depressing and emotionally draining” for the actor.
The “All Too Well” singer and Alwyn were notoriously “private” during their six-year relationship, which was “partly due to COVID restrictions” but also because they “preferred it that way,” according to the insider.
The “Conversations With Friends” star reportedly hopes to return to his quiet lifestyle now that the elephant in the room has been addressed.
“He does not want to discuss this anymore, but he knew that if he didn’t say anything, it would go on indefinitely,” they added.
“Swifties never let anything die.”
Alwyn publicly addressed his split from Swift for the first time over the weekend, admitting that he “understands people’s curiosity” but hopes they can respect his boundaries.
“I would hope that anyone and everyone can empathize and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving, fully committed relationship of over six and a half years,” he said. “That is a hard thing to navigate.”
“What is unusual and abnormal in this situation is that, one week later, it’s suddenly in the public domain and the outside world is able to weigh in,” he added.
Once their split was thrust into the spotlight, Alwyn said it was “dissected, speculated on [and] pulled out of shape beyond recognition.”
“And the truth is, to that last point, there is always going to be a gap between what is known and what is said,” he added. “I have made my peace with that.”
Due to the private nature of their romance, Alwyn refused to share any details about their breakup — or reveal if he and the singer are still in contact.
“As everyone knows, we together — both of us, mutually — decided to keep the more private details of our relationship private. It was never something to commodify and I see no reason to change that now.”
Despite that, Alwyn said he is “fortunate to be in a really great place in [his] life, professionally and personally.”
“I feel really good,” he added.
