Target to Slash Prices on 5,000 Items as Stubborn Inflation Hangs On

Yesterday, Target announced that it will lower prices across approximately 5,000 everyday items to help bolster sales as shoppers scale back on spending in response to sticky inflation. So far, 1,500 items have been discounted, with more to come.
“Consumers will enjoy savings on everyday items such as milk, meat, bread, soda, fresh fruit and vegetables, snacks, yogurt, peanut butter, coffee, diapers, paper towels, pet food and more,” the press release said.
These cost savings can help budget-conscious shoppers who may be feeling the pinch of long-term price rises on their wallets. With several holiday sales ahead, including Memorial Day, graduations, Father’s Day, 4th of July and back-to-school season, shoppers may be able to get more for their dollar.
Target isn’t the first major retailer to scale back prices. Fast food chain McDonalds announced plans to offer a $5 meal in response to customer frustrations over rising prices. Walmart also rolled back prices this year to help increase sales.
If you’re an avid Target shopper like me, these cuts may help soften the blow of the high prices we’re seeing elsewhere. Here’s what Target just lowered prices on and what you can expect in the near future.
Discounted items you can find at Target this summer
Target recently dropped the prices of approximately 1,5000 items, most of them from Target’s food and beverage brand, Good & Gather.
Here are a few of Target’s price cuts that are already here or on the way:
- Good & Gather Unsalted Butter (1 lb) is now $3.79 (was $3.99)
- Good & Gather Organic Baby Spinach (5 oz) is now $2.99 (was $3.29)
- Prime Hydration Sports Drinks (16.9 fl oz) is now $1.99 (was $2.19)
- Jack’s Frozen Pepperoni Pizza (14.3 oz) is now $3.99 (was $4.19)
- Thomas’ Plain Bagels (20 oz) is now $3.79 (was $4.19)
- Pepperidge Farm Goldfish Cheddar Flavor Blasted Crackers (6.6 oz) is now $2.79 (was $2.99)
- Good & Gather Sea Salt Roasted Nuts (9.5 oz) is now $5.29 (was $6.89)
There are also savings for Clorox Scented Wipes (75 count), Huggies Baby Wipes (16 count) and Aveeno SPF 50 Sunscreen (3 fl oz).
While the price drops may seem minimal, they can help you save a bit on your next grocery haul. For example, let’s say you purchase 25 food items from Target that have been marked down by $0.30 each. You could save $7.50 on your grocery bill. That could add up to tens to hundreds of dollars per month, depending on your spending habits.
Be on the lookout for more savings
Target isn’t the only retailer marking items down ahead of the summer. In addition to McDonalds and Walmart, other stores like Michaels, IKEA and H&M have recently lowered prices. And earlier this month, Whole Foods CEO, Jason Buechel, shared the news of the increase in deals at Whole Foods with CNBC, particularly for its 365 brand. Whole Foods has been increasing sales and discounts in quantity and value, and so far it has been successful for the grocery store, Buechel said.
While the savings can offer some relief for your wallet, it’s important to stick to a budget to avoid overspending and use these discounts to your advantage. The savings may offer some relief for your budget, but it’s always best to comparison shop to make sure you’re getting the best deal.
For even more savings, see if your favorite retailers have a rewards program. For instance, Target Circle offers deals on select items every week for its reward members, and it’s free to join. Whole Foods also offers boosted discounts for Amazon Prime members.
