Tae Hayes released by Jets one day after weed arrest
Tae Hayes’ short-lived career with the Jets is over.
The Jets on Monday released the 26-year-old cornerback, shortly after his Sunday morning arrest in Alabama on a charge of marijuana possession, according to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.
The 5-foot-9, 188-pound Hayes was booked and released after posting a $300 bond. The Jets subsequently released a statement saying, “We are aware of the situation and we will refrain from further comment, as it is a pending legal matter.”
The matter is no longer the Jets’ concern.
Hayes was signed to the practice squad Oct. 3 and elevated for their game against the Eagles in Week 6, recording two tackles.
He originally signed with the Jaguars in 2019 as an undrafted free agent out of Appalachian State and also played for the Dolphins, Panthers, Patriots, Vikings and the Ravens. Overall, he played in 14 career games and had 18 tackles, one fumble recovery and two passes defensed.
He was a star defensive back at Appalachian State after playing for Decatur High School in Alabama.
Hayes also played for the Birmingham Stallions, now of the United Football League. He was a member of the Stallions’ 2022 USFL championship team.
He signed a reserve/future contract with the Jets in January and had been expected to compete for a roster spot.
