SPOILER ALERT: Potential plot points for “Superman” ahead. Proceed with caution.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Need a theme song for today’s on-location activity with James Gunn’s “Superman” film? We suggest The Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends.”

On Public Square we had all the makings of a Justice League “genesis,” as Cleveland’s own Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), Nathan Fillion (Green Lantern), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi) and Superman himself, David Corenswet, were all in action.

The scenes that began filming mid-morning seem to come during (or at the tail end of) conflict, with a mass of citizen onlookers gathered in the Square’s park space.

Some extras seemed to greet the heroes; most appeared to gaze up at the Huntington Building at some imagined object or incident.

Merced and Gathegi were lowered to the ground from the air, joining Corenswet and Fillion before the foursome walked toward the gathered crowd.

The Hawkgirl and Terrific actors both seemed to handle their rigs well, though Merced did have a landing stumble on one of the takes.

At 88 degrees as of 11:45 a.m. and mostly sunny skies for the shoot, everyone on set seemed to be feeling the heat, especially those hanging in the air.

Gathegi had the added burden of wearing a beefy jet pack in the scene. Thankfully, a blue-screen-clad assistant was there to help guide both Gathegi and Merced in various takes.

With the promise of some rumored zip line work later in the day, both Merced and Gathegi were in harnesses for nearly all of the early shoot. Medics brought ice in for both harnessed actors to keep them cool.

In the scene, Corenswet was seen picking up a couple of children after a short walk north towards Rockwell Avenue. He comforted the youths for a moment.

For his part, Gunn seemed to be directing the crew to replicate different angles of the same shot, both with and without a giant shade. Gunn had a lot of back and forth between the actors and the directors’ tent.

Metropolis Police Department actors were then brought into the shot, seemingly directing those civilian onlooker extras.

It was speculated by fans just off set that the alternate angle/shade shots may be fortified with CGI after principal photography wraps.

At breaktime, 12:30 p.m., an exodus of extras made their way to the “extras holding area” in Tower City Center for lunch.
