‘Superman’ filming high-flying stunts at Progressive Field (photos, videos, spoilers)
SPOILER ALERT: Plot points for DC’s upcoming “Superman” are below. Proceed with caution.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — One year from now, we’ll all be watching director James Gunn’s “Superman” in theaters, remembering when the cast and crew filmed scenes at Cleveland City Hall, Public Square, the Detroit-Superior Bridge and Progressive Field.
For the next three days, the home of the Cleveland Guardians will be playing the part of LordTech Field, where Clark Kent’s adopted hometown team, the Metropolis Meteors, play. Filming at the ballpark began on Thursday with wire work as four stuntpersons fought in the air before crash landing in left field.
Superman actor David Corenswet, Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific) and María Gabriela de Faría (The Engineer) were then called to the set to shoot closer angles of the scene. Drone footage showed Mister Terrific and The Engineer tangled up, and Superman battling a villain in an all-black suit. The character, whose identity we won’t spoil, was last seen arresting Superman in front of Metropolis City Hall on June 25.
Filming continued at a deliberate pace into the afternoon. Black drapes covered the stadium gates, blocking the view of passersby. Not that they didn’t try to get a look inside. Security removed a blogger from the top deck of the Gateway East parking garage after he snapped some photos and posted them online. Production was interrupted for several minutes when a helicopter from a local TV station flew over the ballpark hoping to get a peek of the action.
“Is that cleveland.com?”, someone on the film crew asked.
No, it wasn’t.
“Superman” arrives in theaters on July 11, 2025.
