Soroptimist hosts spring fashion show: Hometown briefs

Soroptimist hosts spring fashion show: Soroptimist International of Cape May County hosted its annual spring fashion show and luncheon May 19.

This year’s event was held at the Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May. More than 200 women attend the show each year, according to the club.

The show’s theme was “Seaside Fashions” and featured clothes from Island Lily Boutique in Avalon. This year’s runway included Elizabeth Mendel, Miss South Jersey 2024.

The event also featured themed raffle baskets and a pop-up store by Island Lily Boutique.

The annual fashion show is one of Soroptimist International’s major fundraising events. This year’s event raised more than $6,000, with 100% of the proceeds going to education funds and awards for Cape May County women and girls dedicated to improving their lives, dependents and the community.

Daniel J. Brestle, of Longport, has been named to the board of the John R. Elliott Foundation.




Longport resident joins HERO board: Daniel J. Brestle, of Longport, has been appointed to the John R. Elliott Foundation Board of Trustees.

Brestle is the retired vice chairman and president of Estée Lauder Companies Inc. and a retired U.S. Air Force captain.

He was a three-sport graduate of Holy Spirit High School in Absecon and went on to earn a degree in applied economics from Villanova University in Pennsylvania. He served as a first lieutenant and transportation officer during the Vietnam War at Bien Hoa Air Force Base and was later promoted to base transportation officer at Homestead AFB in Florida.

“We are pleased and honored to have Dan join our board,” said Bill Elliott, board chairman. “We are looking forward to benefiting from his wealth of marketing and branding experience.”

The HERO Campaign promotes the use of designated drivers in memory of Navy Ensign John Elliott, who was killed in a July 2000 collision with a drunk driver two months after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy.

Hammonton to host community market series: The Hammonton Green Committee will host an outdoor community market event from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday on Horton Street.

The market’s focus is to help inspire the community to live more sustainably with quality products. Local farmers and artisans will be featured at the market, and local musician Samantha Irwin will provide entertainment.

To keep with the sustainable theme, things like fermentation supplies and waste-free products will be available for purchase.

June’s market will see the Green Committee bring its mobile seed library with free seeds to share with the community. There will be information available about home composting as well.

The community market event will have items eligible for purchase with SNAP benefits.

The Green Committee will host additional community markets July 26, Aug. 23 and Sept. 27.

Student workshops

Each summer, boys and girls ages 11-17 learn new skills at East Lynne Theater Company‘s student workshops, which will run from July 1 to 10 and culminate with a live production.




East Lynne student workshops: East Lynne Theater Company in Cape May will hold its annual student theater workshops for children ages 11 to 17 this July.

Workshops will be July 1 to 5 (except July 4) and July 8 to 10, and culminate with two live performances of the original show “Dial ‘CM’ for Murder.”

The purpose of the workshops is to enhance theater and teamwork skills and encourage students to perform on stage or participate backstage. Children will be taught and supervised by workshop director Sally Bingham, who has acted, directed and written plays for more than 35 years.

“Dial ‘CM’ for Murder” is a play on “Dial ‘M’ for Murder,” which East Lynne will produce July 31 to Aug. 31. The two live performances, which are free and open to the public, will be at 7 p.m. July 11 and 12 at the theater at 500 Hughes St.

The student workshop is $250 payable by July 1. Children under age 11 may join if an older sibling is registered. The workshop is limited to 15 students.

All skill levels are welcome, and previous experience is not required.

Beth Israel

Beth Israel has been holding services on the beach during the summer for the past 30 years.




Margate beach services: Beth Israel will hold two Friday night worship services on the Huntington Avenue beach in Margate this summer.

The services will be at 5:30 p.m. July 12 and Aug. 23. The beach is behind the Margate Public Library. Rabbi Michael Feshbach will lead attendees in Shabbat melodies.

Broadway Brunch in OC: The Greater Ocean City Theatre Company will host its 13th annual Broadway Brunch on July 14 at the Linwood Country Club.

The brunch will begin at 11:30 a.m. Eleven students will be recognized and awarded scholarships for their accomplishments as student leaders in the world of performing arts.

Class of 2024 scholarship recipients are Adarsh Chauhan, Alivia Chieffo, Haley Dukich, Milo Ellis, Jess Luciano, Vivian Maucher, Katie McAlister, Brielle McDowell, Carmiya Morris, Ryan Mulraney and Keira Reilly.

The 2024 Commitment to the Arts Awards will be presented to Ameriprise Financial/Frank Faverzani and the William and Nancy Hughes Performing Arts Society. The theater company also will posthumously honor Donald Kravitz, a local photographer who captured special moments from Atlantic City headliners, Miss America, Ocean City’s special events, the Ocean City Theatre Company and beyond.
