Snapchill, a company that cans cold coffee across the country and started in Watertown, has voluntarily recalled its products due to the possible growth and production of the deadly botulinum toxin, which causes botulism.

The Food and Drug Administration published the recall as a public service announcement last week, which said that the low-acid canned foods process for manufacturing Snapchill’s canned coffee products was not filed with the FDA, required by regulation because of the risk of botulinum toxin growth in low-acid canned foods and drinks. Botulism is a rare but serious illness that attacks the body’s nerves and causes symptoms like general weakness, dizziness, double-vision, and trouble with speaking or swallowing.

The recall impacts hundreds of roasters and coffee brands that partnered with Snapchill to can their coffee, including some in Massachusetts, like George Howell, Broadsheet, Fazenda, and Little Wolf. Some roaster brands were also sold at local grocery stores and Whole Foods.

Snapchill told Boston.com late last year they began collaborating with coffee shops during COVID-19 because cafes were closed, and roaster owners were interested in working with Snapchill to sell their products via e-commerce or at grocery stores. They also recently opened a plant in Wisconsin to handle orders for Walmart.

In a statement, Snapchill said no illnesses have been reported, and they are not aware of any botulinum toxin being found in their product.

“At Snapchill, the safety and satisfaction of our customers are our highest priorities, and we are working swiftly to resolve the issue,” the statement said. “We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or concern this recall may cause. We are working with the FDA on solutions to restart production within standards.”

The FDA said Snapchill products will have language on the cans that say “produced and distributed by Snapchill LLC” underneath the nutrition facts. Some products may also be labeled “Snapchill Coffee.”

If consumers still have Snapchill canned products, the FDA said they can either destroy them, return it to Snapchill, or return it to wherever it was purchased. Snapchill will even offer a refund if the customer provides a proof of purchase and picture. Customers can email compliance@snapchill.com for more information about refunds and returns.

It isn’t immediately clear when production of the recalled cans will resume.
