WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) – Memorial Day Weekend plans now may call for some flexibility for whatever the weather brings Saturday night. For some, this may mean a shift in plans.

Millions of travelers are hitting the roads but here in KAKEland, a severe weather threat could mean staying indoors Saturday night and waiting to travel Sunday morning.

An expert from AAA has tips in case you’re in the middle of severe weather.

“There’s a lot of tornadoes that come and go and you just learn to deal with it and watch for it and be safe,” said Carol Shipley, traveling from Wichita Falls, Texas to Kansas City.

Shipley hit the road on Friday for a family reunion but for Saturday night, when severe weather hits, she may have to celebrate with family indoors.

“We’ll be right across from where we need to go inside if we have to,” said Shipley.

“I flew in this morning from Corpus Christi, and my plan is to drive back Saturday night, at 12 o’clock back to Corpus,” said Hunter Martinez.

Martinez is also driving through but he should beat the severe weather to get to the Texas coast.

“I did not know that that does change a lot of our plans for our drive plan,” said Martinez.

A spokesperson from AAA suggests everyone stays on top of the forecasts for the weekend.

“It’s important to check the forecast and we recommend having a weather app on your phone,” said Shawn Steward, AAA Spokesperson.

One app you can download is the KAKE First Alert Weather App.

If you do plan to be out and about on Saturday night, especially a long way from home, be cautious.

“Drive for the conditions. So slow down. If it’s raining, avoid cruise control if at all possible when the roads are wet because if you hit a pool of water, it’s a lot harder to regain control of your vehicle,” said Steward.

AAA adds if you are going to drive at all on Saturday, make sure you have good windshield wiper blades and make sure to be weather-aware.
