Roll credits: AMC Classic Fashion Square 10 permanently closed

Ten movie screens have gone dark for good at the AMC movie theater near Fashion Square Mall.

The theater closed permanently on Sunday.

Fashion Square 10, located at 4511 Fashion Square Blvd., was acquired by AMC Theatres from Carmike Cinemas in 2017.

Revenue for the world’s largest theater chain was propped up by last July’s box office hits “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.” AMC reported that ticket sales to those movies lifted the company to the best month in the company’s 103-year history. The company took on a tremendous amount of debt to stay afloat during the pandemic when theaters closed and customers were sheltered at home. At the end of 2023, the company still owed $4 billion.

Ironically, AMC Entertainment stock rose 20% over the weekend as “meme stock trading” ramped up the value of the struggling company’s stock.

AMC stock opened Monday morning at $5.55 per share, its market capitalization rising to $1.6 billion.

Quality 10 Powered by Emagine in Saginaw, Bay City 10 GDX located in the Bay City Mall, NCG Cinemas in Midland and Celebration Cinema in Mount Pleasant are the four remaining theaters that show first-run movie releases in the Great Lakes Bay Region.
