Terry Rooney, LSU baseball’s associate director of program development and recruiting, is on track to become the next pitching coach at South Carolina, according to D1Baseball.
Attempts to confirm the report from LSU personnel have been unsuccessful.
Rooney served as LSU’s pitching coach under head coach Paul Mainieri in Baton Rouge in 2007 and 2008 before leaving to become the head coach at Central Florida. He was also Mainieri’s pitching coach at Notre Dame for three seasons before then, joining his staff in 2003.
The Advocate learned on Monday that Mainieri is on track to become the next head coach at South Carolina. D1Baseball was the first to report the news.
Mainieri had coached the Tigers from 2007-21 before retiring after the 2021 season. He led LSU to a national title in 2009 and the College World Series final in 2017.
This season was Rooney’s first back at LSU since leaving the program after 2008. He was the head coach of the Golden Knights from 2009-15 before becoming the pitching coach and associate head coach at Alabama in 2016.
He then went on to serve as an assistant coach at Houston from 2017-21 before spending two seasons at Purdue, also as an assistant.
