Record travel expected for 4th of July weekend

Gas prices over the Fourth since 2014.

This Independence Day weekend, the Michigan Department of Transportation is removing lane restrictions on 60% of its road and bridge projects to ease traffic delays for an expected record number of holiday travelers.

Beginning at 3 p.m. today and continuing until 6 a.m. Monday, 105 out of 174 projects statewide will have lane restrictions removed. Drivers are advised, however, that equipment and certain traffic configurations will remain in place, such as temporary shifts or shoulder closures.

In Kingsford, Carpenter Avenue at Woodward Avenue will have one lane open in each direction with a traffic shift. The same is true for U.S. 41/M-28 in Ishpeming where there will be a traffic shift at Lakeshore Drive. Detours will be posted for side streets.

AAA estimates more than 2.6 million Michigan residents will travel 50 miles or more from home during the holiday weekend, a record for the second consecutive year. About 1.4 million people will travel on Wisconsin roads this holiday weekend, also an anticipated record, AAA said.

Plans people have for celebrating the Fourth of July this year.

In Brown County, Wis., Highway 172 is closed to through traffic between Highway 54 in the village of Hobart and the Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport. Through traffic is detoured via Highway 54 and I-41.

In Oneida County, Wis., U.S. 8 near Rhinelander is closed from Highway 17 North to Oneida County P. Traffic is detoured via Oneida County P and Highway 17.

“Buckle up, drive sober and be courteous to other motorists,” WisDOT Secretary Craig Thompson said in a news release. “These simple steps can help save lives and prevent crashes,” he said.
