Record Memorial Day travel brings TSA warning for Birmingham flyers
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Memorial Day travel this year has reached unprecedented levels, according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). On May 23 and 24, Birmingham officers screened approximately 6,600 passengers each day, handling around 18,500 bags daily.
However, amid this surge in travel, the TSA has issued a stern warning to those flying out of Birmingham. The agency is on track to find more firearms in 2024 than last year, posing a serious security risk.
“We have stopped at Birmingham, 39 firearms at the checkpoint already this year,” said TSA spokesperson Sari Koshetz. “Last year we stopped 70, so this is obviously a very serious situation.”
The TSA stresses the importance of adhering to firearm transport regulations as the summer travel season begins. Koshetz emphasized that failing to comply could have severe consequences, including jail time and hefty fines.
“If you need to travel with a gun, it needs to be secured in a hard-sided locked box, declared with the airline, and stored in a checked bag,” Koshetz explained. “That goes for the guns and the ammunition. You can’t have any of that in your carry-on bag.”
To avoid issues at the checkpoint, travelers are advised to thoroughly inspect their luggage. “Unzip every compartment in your suitcase to ensure no prohibited items are accidentally packed,” Koshetz recommended.
In addition to firearm regulations, the TSA advises passengers to arrive at the airport at least two hours before their flight and to follow the 3-1-1 rule for liquids:
3 – Each container of liquids, gels, aerosols, creams, and pastes must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less.
1 – All containers must fit comfortably in one, clear, quart-sized, zip-top plastic bag.
1 – Each passenger is limited to one quart-sized bag.
Beating the long security lines doesn’t have to be a dream. Consider enrolling in TSA PreCheck, which offers expedited screening with dedicated lanes and allows you to keep your shoes, light jacket, and electronics in your carry-on during screening. Alternatively, download the mobile app from your chosen airline or the TSA itself. These apps can offer real-time security wait times and even allow you to check in for your flight electronically, saving you valuable time at the airport. Remember, a little preparation can go a long way as the busy travel season ramps up.
