North Platte’s Mayor Kelliher proclaims May 19-25 National Travel and Tourism Week

North Platte kicked off National Travel and Tourism Week with a proclamation from Mayor Brandon Kelliher outside one of North Platte’s beloved attractions, the Prairie Arts Center.

Kelliher proclaimed May 19-25 as National Travel and Tourism Week in North Platte.

“The travel industry is essential to the success of every industry and will continue to be a critical part of North Platte and Lincoln County’s economy, development and workforce,” he said in his proclamation.

In 2023 alone, travel and tourism generated $89 billion in state and local tax revenue, Kelliher said.

Kelliher was joined by members of the Prairie Arts Center and Visit North Platte staff.

Visit North Platte Executive Director Lisa Burke said visitors to North Platte bring in more than $125 million annually and that local tourism supports more than 1,500 jobs.

“North Platte is a unique community with a lot of very friendly people who like to welcome visitors,” she said.

With a strong tie to western heritage, as well as railroad history, Burke said North Platte has a lot to offer to fans of history.

“One of my favorite places is the barn at the Buffalo Bill Ranch,” she said. “With everything that we have to offer and to do in our area, we’re very blessed to have as much as we do.”

Burke mentioned Potters Pasture Mountain Bike Trail and tanking down the Platte River with Dusty Trails as two excellent tourism destinations.

“There’s so many things to do here in our community, “ she said. “We’re very lucky.”

The North Platte Visitor Center is open seven days a week year round. Burke said visitors — and residents of North Platte looking for something to do — are welcome to stop in, grab brochures and even ask for suggestions from their staff for any tourism or travel needs.
