Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon Say They’re “Moving Fast and Furious” on ‘Big Little Lies’ Season 3

Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman are continuing to tease a third season of Big Little Lies.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, the pair addressed revealing that they both have been discussing where they want their stories to go in a possible third season.

“I get the ring ring: ‘Hey, is [season 3] happening?’ Like, Nic,” Witherspoon said to Kidman. “You got excited.”

“I got excited,” Kidman agreed.

“It’s OK, baby. I get excited too. Then I’ve got Laura [Dern] calling me and Zoe [Kravitz] and Shailene [Woodley]. They’re all like, ‘Nic said that we’re making Big Little Lies season three?’” Witherspoon added of the rest of their co-stars also wondering what was going on.

Then Kidman indicated that season three is happening. “But we are now! We’re moving fast and furious, and Liane [Moriarty] is delivering the book,” she said. “Yeah, and we’re in good shape.”

After her earlier comments about season three being in the works were quick to spread, Kidman quipped that from now on they need to “shut up” because “there’s this whole thing that you should never talk about something until you’ve done it. If you talk about doing it, it’s the dopamine hit of doing it. You feel like you’ve done it.”

Witherspoon shared the same sentiments. “Well, I have a rule. It’s called, ‘Don’t be full of shit,’” she said laughing. “It’s called ‘The No-BS Rule in Hollywood,’ because how many people tell you they’re doing X, Y, Z, X, Y, Z? It’s like, ‘I don’t want to talk about it until I’m standing in the costume on the set.’ Then I will confirm to you that it’s happening. It’s really hard to stop it once you’re standing on set in costume.”

Sources familiar with the series told The Hollywood Reporter in January that Witherspoon and Kidman have an idea for a season three and were going to present a formal pitch for HBO.

In an interview with Elle, Kidman explained that following the second season’s release in 2019, they needed time to sort out what would be the next stories to tell.

“There’s the richness of the storylines, which we’d always discussed, but it needed time because there’s actual unbelievable depth to the next chapter of these women’s lives and their children’s lives — because children grow up, and that’s kind of fascinating,” Kidman said.

The cast, which also includes Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and Zoë Kravitz, remain tight knit. Kidman explained that their bond is what makes it easy to try to coordinate schedules to work together again. “I think when you’re all scattered and never sort of cross paths, it’s very, very different,” she said. “But when you’re all still very intertwined, that’s what makes it doable, because there’s a willingness, and you want to spend time together.”

The first season of series was based on Liane Moriarty’s best-seller and created and written by producer David E. Kelley. The series, which premiered in 2017, went on to win eight Emmys, including best limited series.
