Nashville Predators sign star free agent forward Steven Stamkos to a 4-year deal | Report

The Nashville Predators made a big splash on the first day of NHL free agency, signing forward Steven Stamkos to a four-year contract worth $8 million per season Monday, according to a report by TSN’s Pierre LeBrun.

The Predators — who have been rumored to be in on Stamkos all weekend — have not yet announced the deal.

Stamkos, 34, played 16 seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning, scoring 555 goals and 582 assists in 1,082 games. It was reported during the NHL draft that Stamkos and Tampa would not reach an agreement before free agency, leaving him free to test the market.

Stamkos — who has the third most goals among active players — won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard trophy in 2010 and 2012. He also won two Stanley Cups with Tampa in 2020 and 2021.

Though his age may be a concern to some, he is still a highly effective player. The former No. 1 overall pick (2008) scored 40 goals for Tampa last season, and has 116 goals the past three seasons combined.

With Stamkos in the lineup, Nashville’s offense instantly improves, especially its power play. He’s scored 10 or more power play goals in seven straight seasons and in 13 of his 16 career seasons.
