It’s been a long day for Todd Gilliland, who has bounced off the wall and slipped out of the groove during a restart at different points in the race. He is in the wall and has a right-front tire down, bringing out the caution.
A replay shows whatever went wrong, whether it was a tire or a brake issue, happened down the frontstretch.
Chase Elliott tells his team that he ran something over with his left-side tires, calling it “substantial”. The field will pit, likely for the final time.
Chase Elliott, Ty Gibbs, Kyle Larson and Daniel Suarez all penalized on pit road for speeding and will start at the rear on the restart.
Chris Buescher gets a good jump and leads Josh Berry into turn 1.
Berry slips to fifth as Ryan Blaney and others on newer tires surge ahead.
Denny Hamlin wins Stage 2 and gets the playoff point, with Chase Elliott in second. Elliott is pushing for the regular season points title, so it makes sense that he would stay out. Ryan Blaney, Martin Truex Jr. and Chris Buescher are among the cars that pitted before stage end.
The top 10:
- Denny Hamlin
- Chase Elliott
- Brad Keselowski
- William Byron
- Erik Jones
- Kyle Larson
- Alex Bowman
- Christopher Bell
- Joey Logano
- Tyler Reddick
Good day for Erik Jones earning stage points in both stages.
Chase Elliott talks through where he stands vs. Hamlin in each corner, and he tells his team his tires are more worn than they have been at the end of this run. That would make sense as the first full run of the day.
Ty Gibbs pits first, and Josh Berry a couple laps later as the off-cycle cars stop. Chase Elliott moved past Berry for second before he stopped. Hamlin’s lead over Elliott is 4.7 seconds.
William Byron has slipped outside the top five and is “really (expletive) struggling,” he tells his team.
Josh Berry was pretty steady for about 10 laps ahead of Denny Hamlin, but Hamlin gets the power down off Turn 3 to make the pass for the lead.
Chase Elliott may have the fastest car on the race track, finally getting past Ty Gibbs for third. Hamlin leads Berry by 1.1 seconds and Elliott by 3.0 seconds.
Josh Berry leads Denny Hamlin and Ty Gibbs after staying out. Berry and Gibbs both stayed out and will likely need to stop soon.
Ross Chastain is off the pace and hits the wall solidly a couple times, and the caution is out. Right-front issue perhaps?
“I lost steering before I lost the right front,” Chastain tells his team on the radio.
Chastain is among the wild card hopefuls, in a good spot points-wise right now but can’t afford too many more issues.
The No. 1 Chevrolet is done for the day with a broken suspension on the right front.
The majority of the field comes down pit road, with Denny Hamlin and others taking two tires.
Carson Hocevar is penalized for equipment interference. Hamlin is the leader, with Chase Elliott the first with four tires at sixth. Todd Gilliland is penalized for too fast on pit road. Harrison Burton is penalized for a safety violation.
Hocevar, Burton and Gilliland will restart at the rear of the field.
Brad Keselowski leads Erik Jones by two seconds as the top six are on older tires and will need to pit in about 15-20 laps. Chase Elliott has had a very good stint so far, up to seventh as the top driver on newer tires.
It has not paid off to be the leader on restarts so far today. Joey Logano goes from P1 to P10 after Brad Keselowski surges ahead before the field even gets to Turn 1, then Logano loses grip on the outside groove.
Keselowski deserves to give a hat tip to Erik Jones for the push on the restart. Those are the top two on the leaderboard.
Chase Elliott is up 13 spots to P11 with fresher tires.
Martin Truex Jr. wins Stage 1, with Denny Hamlin second.
The top 10:
- Martin Truex Jr.
- Denny Hamlin
- Tyler Reddick
- William Byron
- Chase Elliott
- Alex Bowman
- Joey Logano
- Brad Keselowski
- Christopher Bell
- Erik Jones
The first six cars have not pitted yet today and will likely do so during the stage break.
Chase Elliott is the first car off pit road but will restart 24th. Joey Logano will inherit the lead.
Bubba Wallace is the first car down pit road among those who stayed out. Will others follow suit?
Ty Gibbs’ team tells him they will pit before pit road closes with two laps to go in the stage. “Should have a bunch coming with you.”
Back to green, and Martin Truex Jr. goes 2-for-1 in passing Ty Gibbs and William Byron to take the lead.
Gibbs fell outside top five on that restart.
Josh Berry gets out of the groove in Turn 1 and is off the pace. He comes down pit road for new tires.
Noah Gragson spins off of Turn 1 and backs into the wall. Pretty major damage to the rear.
Gragson tells his team that he is OK after the hard hit. As for the car: “We’re done.”
Some pit. Some stay out, including the leaders.
Ty Gibbs leads William Byron by 1.7 seconds. Some drivers reporting tight conditions, including Bubba Wallace. Chase Elliott tells his team he likes his balance from P13, but “trying to get it going”.
Ty Gibbs leads the field to the green flag, and he eventually wrestles the lead away to lead Lap 1. William Byron edges ahead of Martin Truex Jr. for second.
The RCR crew had to fix an oil line on the No. 8 Chevrolet on Sunday while already on the grid, according to FOX Sports, so Kyle Busch will start at the rear of the field.
A isolated storm cell did pass over Pocono Raceway on Sunday morning, but the track should be ready to go well within time of the scheduled green flag.
Corey Lajoie will start at the rear of the field after his team worked on the No. 7 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet after brushing the wall in qualifying.
Ty Gibbs won the pole during the qualifying session on Saturday.
