Napa County jobless rate dipped in May. Who’s hiring?

The unemployment rate in Napa County was 3.1% in May, down from a revised 3.8% in April and above the year-ago estimate of 2.9%, the state Employment Development Department reported on Friday.

That compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 4.5% for California and 3.7% for the U.S. during the same period.

In Napa County, farm jobs dropped year-over-year but were up from April to May. Private education and health services and retail jobs saw the biggest gains in May.

Leisure and hospitality jobs, including accommodation and food service jobs and food service and drinking places jobs, saw small gains year-over-year and month-over-month.

Napa and Inyo counties tied for the fifth-lowest jobless rate among the state’s 58 counties. To compare, Napa County has 72,800 workers versus Inyo County’s 8,500.

Solano County had the 28th lowest jobless rate. Sonoma County ranked eighth. San Mateo County had the lowest rate at 2.9%.

Local employers with the most job ads included Napa Valley Unified School District, Providence, Adventist Health, Treasury Wine Estates, California Public Utilities Commission, the Culinary Institute of America, Auberge Resorts, Redwood Credit Union, Bear restaurant and Aimbridge Hospitality.

Occupations with the most help-wanted ads in Napa County included registered nurses, retail sales, servers, retail supervisors, food service managers, bartenders, hotel staff, managers, and home health and personal care aides.
