‘Naomi: In Fashion’ Chronicles the Rise and Domination of Naomi Campbell
Over the last 40 years, supermodel Naomi Campbell has blazed a path through the world of fashion and beyond with no signs of slowing down. She’s graced innumerable runways and magazine covers, from being photographed by Jamie Morgan in 1984 to counting designers like Jasper Conran, John Galliano, and Vivienne Westwood among her cohort of creative partners. In Naomi in Fashion (Rizzoli), the multifaceted model tells her story while her collaborators share their insight about her prestigious career. Accompanying the exhibit of the same name at the Victoria & Albert Museum opening June 22, the catalog showcases her personally selected portfolio with meditations on the collected looks and dissects the impact of her presence into five acts: supermodel, muse, brand builder, creative collaborator, and activist.
The book opens with a conversation between Campbell and critic Tim Blanks, editor-at-large for The Business of Fashion. “In the images, I wanted to break every boundary,” Campbell explains. “I didn’t actually know the word boundaries to be honest. I should say I wanted to break all the rules.” Edward Enninful, whose career has tangoed with Campbell’s throughout the years, praises this exact mentality with his preface. “Her unmatched ability to project her power through imagery is a gift to all of us,” he writes.
Imitation may be the highest form of flattery, but for someone who holds resolute to her individuality, inspiration may be a more appropriate homage. Here, a selection of pieces imbued with a touch of the supermodel’s essence.
