Morning Briefing: Francisco Alvarez Won’t Travel to London – Metsmerized Online

Carlos Mendoza told reporters on Monday that Francisco Alvarez will not travel with the team to London and will move his rehab assignment to Triple-A Syracuse. If all goes well, Alvarez could rejoin the Mets on their next homestand, which begins on June 11.

Matthew Broderick, the actor most famous for his role in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” is scheduled to throw out the first pitch in London when the Mets play against the Phillies this weekend. Broderick was born and raised in Manhattan and is a lifelong Mets fan.

Adrian Houser threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, and Drew Smith recorded the final two outs of the eighth inning in his return from the injured list.

David Peterson (0-0, 3.60 ERA) will toe the rubber for his second start of the year, facing off against former Met Trevor Williams (5-0, 2.22 ERA) in the middle game of the series in Washington. Peterson allowed two runs on seven hits to the Dodgers in his first outing of the year. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m.

The Dominican Summer League season got underway on Monday, and the DSL Mets Orange won their opener, 2-0. Third baseman Bohan Adderley homered in his professional debut, and Yoralbert Cadiz threw three scoreless innings.

Mets prospect A.J. Ewing was named the FCL Player of the Week and was promoted to the St. Lucie Mets. Ewing batted .353/.542/1.000 with three homers in five games last week.

Former Pirates and Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano is facing a lifetime ban from MLB for betting on baseball. Marcano allegedly bet on Pirates games while he was on the injured list in 2023. Lindsey Adley of the Wall Street Journal reports that at least four other players are under investigation for betting on baseball.

The Orioles have called up infield prospect Connor Norby from Triple-A Norfolk and placed infielder Jorge Mateo on the seven-day concussion IL. The sixth-ranked prospect in the Baltimore system according to MLB Pipeline, Norby is hitting .286/.374/.510 with nine homers, 17 doubles, and 36 RBIs in 238 plate appearances for Norfolk this year.

The Mariners have signed former Nationals outfielder Victor Robles to a major league contract, and he will join the team for their series in Oakland. Robles was released by Washington over the weekend.

Astros starter Jose Urquidy was pulled from his latest rehab start and will see Dr. Keith Meister to determine whether or not he needs a second Tommy John surgery. Urquidy has yet to pitch this year due to a forearm strain he suffered during spring training.

The Giants have reinstated Michael Conforto from the 10-day IL and placed Blake Snell on the IL with a left groin strain. This is Snell’s second IL stint this year.

The Phillies placed Brandon Marsh on the 10-day IL with a right hamstring strain and Kody Clemens will join him there with low back spasms. Additionally, the team selected the contract of former All-Star outfielder David Dahl and recalled infielder Weston Wilson. Right-handed pitcher Michael Rucker was transferred to the 60-day IL.

1976: Dave Kingman clocks three homers and drives in eight runs as the Mets rout the Dodgers in Los Angeles, 11-0. Kingman tags Burt Hooton for a two-run homer in the fourth inning and gets Hooton again for a three-run homer in the fifth, then caps his day with another three-run shot off Al Downing. Ed Kranepool also takes Hooton deep, and Tom Seaver tosses a three-hit shutout to earn his fifth win of the season.

1998: The Mets send hurlers Greg McMichael and Dave Mlicki to the Dodgers in exchange for former Rookie of the Year Hideo Nomo and Brad Clontz.
