Michigan road construction that may affect your weekend travel plans

If you’re traveling around Michigan this weekend, it’s a good idea to check your route for construction-related closures.

The Michigan Department of Transportation has another 30 road closures are scheduled for Friday, May 31, through Sunday, June 2, on top of more than a hundred ongoing projects.

Some of the major closures on tap this weekend are located on I-96 in Livingston and Oakland counties, M-14 in Washtenaw County, and I-75 in Wayne County. There are also ongoing closures in place at the entrance to the Upper Peninsula.

Below is a look at some of the significant closures to account for this weekend. All projects are weather-dependent. State officials remind drivers to slow down and follow posted signage in work zones.

A complete list of road projects is available through MDOT’s online map and construction list.

U.S. 131 in Kent County

Ramps at the interchange of U.S. 131 and I-196 will be closed intermittently between 9 a.m. and noon Friday in Grand Rapids. Those ramps will be back open to traffic this weekend, though watch out for the ongoing ramp closure on the I-196 ramp to northbound U.S. 131.

M-14 in Washtenaw County

Eastbound drivers will be down one lane this weekend on M-14 between Maple Road and Main Street. It’s a three-week closure, though the lane closure is only scheduled for weekends from 6 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Monday.

Nearby, the westbound M-14 ramp to Main Street will be closed for permit work from 6 a.m. to noon Sunday.

I-96 in Livingston County

Two lanes of westbound I-96 will be closed this weekend between Dorr Road and D 19 near Howell. Construction will require the closure from 8 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Monday.

I-96 in Oakland County

The eastbound highway between Hill Road and Wixom Road will have its right lane closed from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. That’s in addition to an ongoing single-lane closure in each direction of I-96 between I-275 and Kent Lake Road.

I-94 in Macomb County

Westbound I-94 will be without its right two lanes at M-29/23 Mile Road for much of the weekend. The stretch of highway will be under traffic restrictions from 5 a.m. Saturday until about 7 p.m. Sunday. During that time, the ramps to/from 23 Mile Road and I-94 will be closed as well.

I-75 in Oakland County

Drivers heading north on I-75 near Hazel Park may run into traffic slowdowns this weekend. The northbound highway will have one lane closed from Woodward Heights Boulevard to I-696, starting at 6 a.m. Saturday and continuing into the early morning Monday.

I-75 in Wayne County

Southbound I-75 will have its left lane closed between Clark Street and Livernois Avenue starting at 7 a.m. Saturday. Drivers should expect slowdowns in the area, at least until 6 p.m. when the left lane is expected to reopen.

The service drive in the area remains closed, as do a number of local highway ramps.

Mackinac Bridge

If you’re heading north to the Upper Peninsula, be aware that one lane of I-75 remains closed at the bridge. The closure began in March and is expected to conclude June 7.

Once over the bridge, northbound I-75 remains closed around U.S. 2 for construction through June 24.
