Michael Mosley search: what we know so far
The search for British TV doctor Michael Mosley, known for popularising the 5:2 diet and for his appearances on The One Show and This Morning, is in its fourth day after he went missing on the Greek island of Symi on Wednesday afternoon. Here is what we know so far:
-
Mosley, 67, was last seen leaving Agios Nikolaos beach, where he had been with his wife, Dr Clare Bailey, at about 1.30pm local time on Wednesday. He did not have his mobile phone on him.
-
Bailey alerted the authorities after he failed to return by 7.30pm and they were unable to locate him overnight. On Saturday the search operation was in its fourth day.
-
CCTV footage from a restaurant has shown Mosley in the village of Pedi, proving he reached the area about 20 minutes after he departed from the beach.
-
Just before 2pm, further CCTV footage shows him on the far side of Pedi, heading away from the village and towards a rocky terrain. The search team believe he may have headed in the direction of Symi’s port town and the focus has been redirected to this region.
-
Symi, and nearby islands, are under a yellow weather warning for high temperatures. It was above 40C on the day Mosley went missing and he was seen on CCTV holding an umbrella for shade.
-
The search operation has used drones, a helicopter, divers, specially trained dogs and firefighters, while the Hellenic coastguard has been instructed to patrol the island’s coast and local water taxis have been asked to raise the alarm if they see anything unusual.
-
A number of the island’s residents are also out searching for the British doctor. “There are about 100 people out there looking for him,” the island’s mayor told the Guardian.
-
The couple had been staying with British friends near the port town of Symi.
