Mayor Brown’s Summer City Fitness Program Returns for a Ninth Season with a New Look and Location!

Buffalo, NY – Mayor Byron W. Brown, joined by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York President Dr. Michael Edbauer, announced the next chapter of his Summer City Fitness initiative, a free outdoor fitness program that began eight years ago at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park as part of a partnership between the City of Buffalo and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York. Its new name is Summer City Fitness at Johnnie B. Wiley. The 2024 relaunch will showcase a new brand identity, a new venue, and feature Body of Wealth, a team of expert fitness instructors who are committed to improve the health, well-being and quality of life of all Buffalo residents.

Mayor Brown said, “With Summer City Fitness at Johnnie B. Wiley, we are kicking off our 9th season by taking this free outdoor fitness program to an exciting new level. Body of Wealth instructors have something for everyone, so I invite fitness enthusiasts of all levels to check it out. I want to thank Dr. Michael Edbauer and his staff at Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York for their continued dedication to this program, which continues our shared mission to support initiatives that further promote positive attitudes and behaviors through a lifelong commitment to wellness.”

“Over the last eight years, we’ve witnessed firsthand how Summer City Fitness brings hundreds of people together each summer, promoting healthy lifestyles and fostering a stronger community,” said Dr. Michael Edbauer, president of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. “As the City of Buffalo’s official health plan, we’re proud to continue our support of this impactful program with Mayor Byron W. Brown at the Johnnie B. Wiley Amateur Athletic Sports Pavilion, another cherished East Buffalo landmark.”

Summer City Fitness at Johnnie B. Wiley begins Saturday, June 29th, and continues every Saturday through Saturday, September 7th from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The Johnnie B. Wiley Amateur Athletic Sports Pavilion is located at 1100 Jefferson Avenue. The fitness class will take place in the lot near the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Best Street.

This is the ninth season of Summer City Fitness, sponsored by Mayor Brown, the City of Buffalo and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York. It accommodates all levels of fitness. In addition, free fruits will be supplied by Urban Fruits and Veggies to participants.

All classes are weather permitting.
