We’ll demonstrate this with some redemption examples below.
1. 4 One-Way Tickets to Madrid in Economy (Iberia Plus, British Airways Executive Club) — $2,000+ Value
Iberia’s off-peak awards offer an incredibly affordable option for flying to Europe with points. The airline’s 34,000 Avios one-way business class award rates during off-peak dates from Boston (BOS), Chicago (ORD), New York (JFK), or Washington, D.C. (IAD) to Madrid (MAD) is a highly regarded option.
However, if you need to get the whole family to Spain, the Iberia Plus loyalty program has extremely competitive award rates for economy tickets.
A family of 4 can fly to Spain in November for a total of 68,000 Avios (or 17,000 Avios one-way per person) and a total of $340 in taxes and fees in economy.
If you need more than 4 seats or want to book a return flight and don’t have enough points, you can transfer points to Iberia from a number of other transferrable points programs. These include American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, and Marriott Bonvoy.
Hot Tip:
Avios is the shared points currency of British Airways, Qatar Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus, but you can’t move points to (or from) Iberia Plus within 90 days of joining. Read our ultimate guide on how to transfer Avios between each account.
2. Travel to London With the Whole Family on Virgin Atlantic (Virgin Atlantic Flying Club) — $1,600+ Value
Virgin Atlantic offers highly competitive award rates for flights from the U.S. to London. If you’re looking forward to taking the whole family to London for a Taylor Swift concert (like me) or simply want to visit the U.K.’s capital city with the family in tow, you can usually get these economy tickets for 12,000 to 15,000 Flying Club points during off-peak travel times.
In addition, Chase occasionally provides a transfer bonus to Virgin Atlantic, allowing you to obtain one-way tickets from the U.S. to London for less than 10,000 points.
This is a great opportunity for the entire family to save on flights to Europe.
You can take the entire family — including grandparents — to London with a single welcome offer. For example, as of this writing, you can book up to 6 one-way tickets between the East Coast and London this spring for less than 75,000 points.
Although Virgin Atlantic often adds high fees to tickets, it is quite impressive to use the 75,000-point bonus offer from the Chase Sapphire Preferred card to fly 6 (or more) loved ones to Europe.
Hot Tip:
3. Fly From the West Coast to Hawaii (British Airways Executive Club) — $1,200+ Value
Hawaii ranks as a popular travel destination for a lot of Americans. Flying to the Hawaiian islands can be quite pricey, and once you arrive, you might be surprised by the high costs. One approach to reducing such costs to Hawaii is to redeem British Airways Avios for flights departing the West Coast.
Flights to Hawaii from the West Coast typically cover a distance of 2,001 to 3,000 miles, placing them in Zone 4 on the British Airways Executive Club award chart.
Before British Airways increased award prices on both American Airlines and Alaska Airlines, you could fly round-trip from the West Coast to Hawaii for 26,000 Avios. While that rate no longer exists, you can still book numerous round-trip tickets to paradise for as little as 32,000 Avios per person.
While the welcome bonus offer alone will only get you 2 round-trip tickets to Hawaii at these rates, remember that British Airways Avios are easy to earn. Because the airline partners with Amex Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Capital One Miles, Chase Ultimate Rewards, and Marriott Bonvoy, you can transfer points to British Airways and book additional tickets for the rest of the family.
American Express, Capital One, and Chase transfer instantly at a 1:1 ratio, while Marriott Bonvoy points transfer in about 1 day at a 3:1 ratio. You’ll get a 5,000 Avios bonus for every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points you transfer.
In addition to its transfer partners, British Airways offers a co-branded credit card — the British Airways Visa Signature® Card from Chase. The welcome offer on this card is typically high, helping you to rack up Avios quickly.
Hot Tip:
4. Miami to the Caribbean or Cancun From 8,250 Avios (British Airways Executive Club) — $2,500+ Value
Continuing with a similar theme due to its highly useful distance-based award chart, you can explore a different tropical destination that is a bit closer to home using British Airways Avios. Transferring Avios from Chase Ultimate Rewards lets you easily plan a trip to the Caribbean or Cancun.
You can take the whole family on an American Airlines flight from Miami to many Caribbean islands or to Cancun for as little as 8,250 Avios. You will have nearly enough Avios to book 5 round-trip tickets from Miami to the Caribbean or Cancun at a round-trip cost of 16,500 Avios per person.
Thanks to British Airways’ distance-based award chart, you’ll only pay 8,250 Avios one-way because these destinations are 650 miles or less from Miami. On most award redemptions, taxes range from $5.60 to $50.
5. 2-Night Stay at a Hyatt AIl-Inclusive Resort (World of Hyatt) — $2,300+ Value
If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway, all-inclusive resorts are a great option to leave your worries behind. Hyatt has a selection of all-inclusive brands where you can redeem Hyatt points.
For those planning a family vacation, you can book dozens of all-inclusive, family-friendly resorts using World of Hyatt points transferred from your Chase Ultimate Rewards account.
Free night awards at World of Hyatt all-inclusive resorts start at 12,000 points per night for double occupancy, and additional points are needed for each person per night.
For instance, a family of 4 can secure a Sun Club Junior Suite Ocean Front Double at the family-friendly Sunscape Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa for 31,000 points per night.
If you play your cards right, you can book 2 nights at a Hyatt all-inclusive resort with the 75,000 points from the Chase Sapphire Preferred card welcome offer and still have points to spare.
Since all meals, beverages, and entertainment are included in the price of your stay at all-inclusive resorts, this redemption approach allows you to get a great deal out of your points.
6. Book Qatar Airways Qsuites Between the U.S. and Doha and Beyond (British Airways Executive Club) — $3,000+ Value
Pricing for Qatar Airways’s famed Qsuites flights has dropped sharply ever since the airline began sharing the Avios currency with British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus.
Although Qatar Airways Privilege Club is not a direct transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards, you can book the ultra-long-haul business class ticket in Qsuites by transferring Avios between British Airways and Qatar Airways accounts at a 1:1 rate.
On nonstop flights from the United States to Doha (DOH), a one-way ticket in Qsuites will cost you 70,000 Avios plus about $100 in taxes and fees.
Considering that the one-way business class ticket to Doha can cost up to $10,000 in cash, utilizing your points in this manner would result in a massive redemption value of roughly 15 cents per point from the current welcome offer of the Chase Sapphire Preferred card.
The welcome offer for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card might only be enough for 1 person to enjoy Qsuites, but there are many ways to earn Avios and book this ‘bucket list’ flight for the whole family.
I strategized by applying for numerous travel credit cards that also allowed me to transfer points to British Airways and Qatar Airways. After meeting minimum spend requirements, I accumulated enough points to secure 4 one-way Qsuites tickets between Miami and Doha.
Hot Tip:
Some of these programs occasionally run transfer bonuses that increase the transfer rate by up to 40%, allowing you to save a lot of points when booking multiple Qsuites tickets during one of these Avios transfer bonus opportunities.
7. Cheap Southwest Airlines Tickets (Southwest Rapid Rewards) — $1,200+ Value
Southwest Airlines is a transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards. The points you earn through the Rapid Rewards program are only valid on Southwest flights.
We value Southwest Rapid Rewards points at approximately 1.3 cents each, so 75,000 points earned from the Chase Sapphire Preferred card’s welcome offer are worth $975 in tickets if fully redeemed with the low-cost carrier (which we do not recommend you do). This would result in a decent amount of free flights attained through points.
What’s extraordinary is that if you have a Southwest Companion pass, you can use it to redeem Rapid Rewards points for max value — and bring along your chosen companion (yes, even on award tickets!) for just the price of taxes and fees.
Hot Tip:
You can cancel Southwest tickets before departure at no fee, so you don’t risk anything for booking tickets with points.
Final Thoughts
There are endless ways to take advantage of the Chase Sapphire Preferred card’s 75,000-point welcome bonus offer for family travel.
All our choices involved transferring points to airline or hotel partners such as British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and World of Hyatt. That’s because this way of redeeming points usually yields the most value for your points.
There is some value in using the Chase Travel portal to redeem points directly (at a fixed rate) for flights, hotels, car rentals, activities, or cruises. However, most of the time, transferring points to one of Chase’s transfer partners will usually get you the best value.
Regardless of your choice for redeeming points, it’s important to note that the elevated offer of 75,000 points on the Chase Sapphire Preferred card won’t last forever. If you haven’t gotten the card yet, now might be a great opportunity to boost your Chase Ultimate Rewards balance and start planning your next family vacation using your points.
