Letters: Lack of flight options out of Regina makes travel frustrating

I am very disappointed with the Regina Airport Authority and its failure to provide other flight options offered in and out of Regina. Two weeks ago, my family and I had a booking on WestJet airline to travel to Toronto and back from Regina.

The night before our travels, WestJet cancelled our flights, due to their mechanics strike. We were asked to cancel our flight for a full refund. As we have a family event in Toronto, we had no choice other than looking for other flights. The only other option is Air Canada and their prices were outrageous.

We started looking flights from other cities. To our surprise, Saskatoon had two other airlines, Flair Airlines and Porter Airlines, flying to Toronto and their prices were very reasonable. We ended up booking our flight with Porter Airlines and drove to Saskatoon and parked the car in the airport parking lot.

My question to the elected officials and the YQR airport authority is this: If Saskatoon can bring two additional airlines to service their citizens, why not Regina? We are the capital city of this province, but we lack flight service options.

Due to having these two airlines, the prices are much cheaper to fly out of Saskatoon compared with Regina. This is very frustrating for frequent travellers like us. Please get on this and provide the necessary services that would make travelling much easier for  people like us.

Cuthand provides important lesson

Thank you, Doug Cuthand. Your well-written biography of Edgar Dewdney and his role in government policy is an important lesson for us all. It is one that some are reluctant to relate because we may be accused of excusing those policies. Removing Dewdney’s name could have the effect of erasing that lesson.

Cuthand too conciliatory

I was disappointed at the conciliatory nature and tone of Doug Cuthand’s column, that, in my opinion, suggested that First Nations people should just get over their historical trauma and accept that those behind the genocide were just following orders.

I was not, however, surprised that this ran in a Canadian establishment newspaper. Pretty much all of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) report recommendations have been ignored and remain unimplemented, including removing public references to people associated with the historical trauma of First Nations.
