Laredo kicks off National Travel and Tourism Week with series of activities

LAREDO, Tx. (KGNS) – Many donned the color teal at the Laredo Convention and Visitors Bureau, all to promote tourism in the Gateway City.

On Monday, May 20, the City of Laredo kicked off National Travel and Tourism Week.

The week was established back in 1983 as an annual tradition to mark the U.S. travel industry’s role in stimulating the economy.

City of Laredo officials and community members gathered as several initiatives were unveiled to promote the city such as a new coffee tour, dog park tour, and even tours for the city’s swimming pools and splash pads.

It’s one of the many ways city leaders are encouraging Laredoans to rediscover their hometown while the city’s tourism department continues its efforts in defining the city of Laredo as a tourist destination.

“With the sports complex, Buena Vista, now that we are going to open up the tennis courts, and then Laredo Heat is going to open up their own complex. All those facilities we’re expecting that we’re going to get more families to come in, more kids to come in and play,” said Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Joel Vasquez. “So, all of that is going to help generate more money and an economic impact to the city. Eventually, it’s going to help grow more the city, it’s going to bring more restaurants, it’s going to help bring more hotels. That’s going to help more the locals because that’s what helps our community not to pay that much taxes. That’s why in the last 15 years the city hasn’t really increased taxes.”

In Laredo, the travel industry encompasses over 5,000 jobs highlighting its profound impact on the local economy.

National Travel and Tourism Week will highlight the essential role that travel will play in driving economic growth and innovation through the theme #TealForTourism.
