Kokoda’s Off-Road MIA Travel Trailer Is Perfect for Adventurous Trips With the Family

According to recent statistics, RV ownership has increased a whopping 62% over the last two decades, a growth driven mainly by millennials and Gen Zers. With remote work and the possibility of attending virtual schools becoming mainstream, it is now easier than ever for people of all ages, even families with kids, to pack up and hit the road.

Travel trailers equipped with all the comforts of home are a fun way for outdoorsy families to disconnect from the daily grind and explore the great outdoors. In this piece, we will explore the M.I.A. travel trailer, a highly capable machine built by Australia-based Kokoda Caravans. Designed for families ready to embark on a lifestyle full of freedom and adventure, this wild RV boasts off-road and off-grid capabilities while also offering comfortable sleeping and living spaces.

Kokoda Caravans has been building reliable adventure machines since 2011 and is known for making their camping rigs as tough as they come in order to take you wherever you want to go, even if there are no known beaten paths on the way there. Like most models offered by the Melbourne, Victoria-based crew, the M.I.A. travel trailer is a cool and clever beast equipped with everything you need to explore the treacherous Australian Outback.

It is built on a dual-axle trailer and measures just 19.5 feet (6 meters) in length, so it offers a shorter travel length than other models in the company’s portfolio. The dual axles, combined with DO35 coupling, Tuff Ride 3.5t Independent Arm Suspension, and 16″ alloy wheels wrapped in heavy-duty off-road tires, enable a smooth yet sturdy ride regardless of the type of terrain you plan to tackle. In terms of construction, sturdiness and durability are guaranteed by the structural CNC plywood frame, charcoal flat composite cladding, and a waterproof one-piece roof made of fiberglass reinforced panel (FRP).

With a tare weight of 2,520 kg (about 5,555 pounds) and an Aggregate Trailer Mass of 3,500 kg (7,716 pounds), it offers a huge payload capacity of approximately 980 kg (2,160 pounds), so you can basically take everything you want with you on the road.

Notable features on the outside include a manual roll-out awning, two full-width tunnel boots up front, two spare tires at the back, and a large toolbox with two sliding plates for an external fridge, barbeque, or generator. The fact that you have not one but two full-width storage compartments is great for families, as they can use one of them to install a slide-out kitchen for outdoor cooking and still have one left for storing camping equipment, fishing rods, paddle boards, surfboards, kid’s toys, and what not.

The M.I.A. also has stabilizer legs on all corners, an outdoor shower, and an exterior entertainment hub with a mount for a 24″ TV, two LED strip lights and portable speakers.

While the exterior can be best described as rugged, the interior exudes style and comfort, offering adventurers a home-like atmosphere. Though the RV is more compact than other models on the market, it offers a spacious interior with a clever layout that incorporates a parent’s sleeping zone, a comfy L-shaped lounge, a kitchen, bunk beds for the kids, and a full bathroom.

It can easily accommodate a group of four in a queen-size bed and bunk twins and offers full standing height inside. Moreover, the bunk area is so spacious that it could even allow for an optional third bunk for larger families.

Besides the full-width bed, the main bedroom area also includes overhead cabinets for storage and a big skylight for ventilation and stargazing. As for the bunk area, it is located on the opposite end of the camper and comes standard with two 1.9-meter (6.2-foot) bunk beds, reading lights with USB ports, two drawers, and a spacious double wardrobe. Each bunk comes with its own window and a second skylight ensures the kids will enjoy plenty of fresh air even when they’re inside.

The lounge/dining area and the kitchen lie opposite each other in the center of the camper and create a nice common area for a family to spend time together indoors if the weather prevents them from exploring outside. The straight sofa offers plenty of seating space, and the adjustable table can drop down to convert the area into an extra bed if necessary.

M.I.A’s kitchen is well-laid-out and practical, with plenty of cabinets, a pull-out pantry, and enough counter space for meal prep. Full-size appliances ranging from a microwave, a minigrill, and a cooktop with three gas burners and one electric burner to a large sink and a 12v, 274-liter compressor fridge with freezer ensure you get plenty of functionality out of this kitchen.

The bathroom inside this travel trailer looks luxurious and modern and includes a super spacious shower, a cassette toilet, a vanity, and plenty of storage provided by overhead cabinets and a couple of cubbies next to the toilet.

For families who want to venture deeper into the backcountry and live off-grid for prolonged periods, M.I.A. has got your back with two 200W solar panels and a 150 Amp lithium-ion battery. Couple that with two 110-liter water tanks, a portable gray water tank, two 9-kg gas bottles, and two 20-liter jerry can holders, and all you have to worry about is making memories you’ll cherish forever.

With its extensive list of coveted features, like comfortable accommodation, a well-appointed kitchen, onboard shower and toilet, and ample storage, the Kokoda Caravans M.I.A. camper is a great option for families who want to take their holiday into the Outback without compromising a thing. In terms of pricing, this magnificent travel trailer starts at AUD $95,990 (approx. USD $64,000 at current exchange rates).
