ABC
SPOILER ALERT: This article contains details of the winner of American Idol Season 22.
Katy Perry took the American Idol stage one last time as a judge before saying goodbye to the ABC reality series competition.
The singer, alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, walked into the Season 22 finale hand in hand. Perry was already visibly emotional when she saw Ryan Seacrest, knowing this would be her last appearance on the show.
During the three-hour finale, Perry took the stage with third-place finalist Jack Blocker, and they performed “What Makes a Woman.”

Throughout the night, the mere mention of it being Perry’s last show made the singer emotional and teary-eyed.
The ladies of the Top 12 took the stage to perform a medley of Perry’s hits in honor of her last show. “Teenage Dream,” “Dark Horse,” and “California Gurls,” were the songs that the girls performed.
Perry didn’t address the viewers on her last day as a judge on American Idol. After announcing the winner of Season 22, Abi Carter performed “What Was I Made For?” which got Perry to shed some tears.
As the confetti and credits rolled, Richie was seen giving an emotional Perry a hug, and Bryan joined afterward.

Perry, Bryan, and Richie joined American Idol in 2018 when ABC revived the singing competition after fifteen seasons on Fox. Since Season 16, the judge’s panel has remained unchanged until Perry’s departure. ABC has not announced who will take Perry’s spot when the show returns for Season 23.
Ahead of the finale, Perry was already anticipating she would be crying at anything that happened.
“I think I will be crying at anything,” Perry said in an interview posted by KABC. ‘It’s been a beautiful journey and I love watching these kids grow and becoming this big beautiful patchwork quilt.”
