Japan To Soon Launch Electronic Travel Authorization for Visa-Exempt Visitors – VisaGuide.News
The Japanese government has announced a new online travel authorization requirement for visa-exempt foreign visitors, a measure that not only enhances security but also streamlines visitor management, providing a sense of reassurance to all.
While the authorities have not shared when the electronic travel authorization requirement will be introduced, it is believed that the change will come along with some other measures planned to enter into force next year, VisaGuide.World reports.
Similarly to Japan, the new plan is also in place for the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
Travelers Exempt From Entry Visas Must Complete Authorization Process Online Before Departing for Japan
During a recent meeting of Cabinet ministers at the Prime Minister’s Office, it was revealed that once the measure enters into force, visa-waiver visitors must submit their travel information online, declaring their personal information and the purpose of their visit before entering Japan.
Under this measure, the Japanese government seek to prevent illegal stays and boost security protocols. At the same time, the Immigration Services Agency will determine the specific details of the scheme, drawing from the example of the US Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), which the US operates in part to help prevent terrorism.
Initially compiled in 2018 and updated annually, this package addresses various aspects of foreign integration and support within Japan. The latest revision, which includes 218 additional measures, reflects Japan’s commitment to supporting foreign nationals residing in the country.
Another focus among these measures is increasing Japanese language skills among foreigners, envisaging opening a new skills development program to replace the existing foreign technical trainee scheme.
Japan Currently Permits Visa-Free Entry to Citizens of 71 Countries & Territories
Passport holders of a total of 71 countries and territories can travel to Japan without the need to apply for a visa beforehand.
However, as soon as electronic travel authorization is introduced, they will need to apply for the document online.
Earlier, the Japanese authorities revealed that the measure mentioned above is planned to enter into force in 2030, so Japan will welcome 60 million tourists.
The Japanese government is taking a proactive stance on the issue of visa overstays. Those entering Japan for business purposes will have to declare the name of their business partners, while those seeking medical attention must indicate the hospital where they will be treated. This comprehensive approach, aimed at reducing the number of overstays, instils confidence in the new system’s effectiveness.
According to official data, Japan welcomed over three million visitors for the third consecutive month in May. Such data also show that arrivals last month increased by 60 percent compared to the same period the previous year and by 9.6 percent compared to May 2019. Japan recorded a record 31.9 million visitors in 2019- before the COVID-19 pandemic closed global borders.
