Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jake Fraley’s daughter was diagnosed with leukemia during the winter, and Fraley has called this year “the most challenging season of my life.” On Friday, the Reds placed Fraley on the family medical emergency list.

“Avery, his daughter, is fine,” Reds manager David Bell said. “We also knew that there would be times throughout the year where Jake would need to be with his family. Everything is moving forward as expected.”

Bell declined to get into many specifics but added that Avery is going through “the normal, expected treatments.”

“Jake and his family are unbelievably strong,” Bell said. “He has put together a support system that has allowed him to stay on the field. They’re strong in every way, and that has helped. Of course, going through anything with your family will wear on you. Jake has handled it as well as possible.”The family medical emergency list goes for three-to-seven days. Bell said that Fraley “needed to be with his family,” and the Reds have supported Fraley through this entire process.

The Reds also placed catcher Luke Maile on the injured list with a herniated disc. Bell said that he expects Maile to be back right after the All-Star break. With Maile out, the Reds called up catcher Austin Wynns from Triple-A.
