Jackson Albertsons on list for sale in grocery chain merger

JACKSON, Wyo. — The Jackson Albertsons on Buffalo Way is on the list of grocery stores to be sold in the purchase of the grocery chain by supermarket giant Kroger.

The merger, first announced in 2022, would see the Cincinnati, OH-based Kroger buy the Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons, consolidating two of the nation’s largest grocery chains. Kroger is currently the second largest grocery company by revenue behind Walmart, bringing in $148 billion in FY 2023. Albertsons’ bringing’ revenue that year was $77.7 billion.

The Biden Administration’s Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in February sued to block the $25 billion merger, which it said would dampen competition and lead to higher prices for consumers.

In response, Kroger and Albertsons said they would sell off hundreds of stores nationwide to C&S Wholesale Grocers. On the list of stores to be sold, released online, are five Albertsons locations in Wyoming, including the one at 105 Buffalo Way in Jackson.

The other Wyoming stores to be sold to C&S, should the FTC approve the merger, include locations in Casper, Cheyenne, Gillette and Rock Springs.

The two companies together plan to sell off a total of 579 stores if the merger is approved.
