It’s Official: ‘Furiosa’ Is a Box Office Flameout
In box office news that’s surely igniting Warner Bros.’ fury, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is the latest film to flop in theaters. George Miller’s post-apocalyptic epic made $32 million through the Memorial Day weekend on Monday, just barely beating out The Garfield Movie, which generated $31.1 million over the four days. Despite Furiosa’s victory, it still came in short of expectations and well behind its predecessor, Mad Max: Fury Road, which opened to $45 million in 2015—and that was without the benefit of a holiday weekend. Furiosa, which stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, cost $168 million to make and has earned just $65 million globally. And while reviews for the film have been mostly positive, the numbers speak for themselves: According to Variety, this was the worst Memorial Day weekend at the box office since 1995 (excluding 2020, when theaters were closed during the COVID-19 pandemic). But while Hollywood’s summer has gotten off to a shaky start, there are some potential hits on the horizon: Despicable Me 4, Twisters, Inside Out 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine are all expected to lure in big crowds.
