Historic Wagon Train Travels Over Sierra Nevada Mountains

PLACERVILLE, CA — Traffic has looked a little different at times over Highway 50 this week as a wagon train made its way from the Lake Tahoe area toward Placerville.

The Highway 50 Association is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the weeklong trek, traveling through Tamarack Pines, Kyburz and the American River Canyon and onward through Pollock Pines and into Placerville. This year’s convoy began the trip in Round Hill on June 1 and was scheduled to make it to the finish line on Saturday.

The California Highway Patrol, which helped escort the wagon train, shared several photos of the journey on social media.

According to CBS 13, the Gold Rush-era reenactment began in 1949 to commemorate the difficult path early travelers undertook to put down roots in California.

Each year, organizers invite experienced riders and teamsters to bring their horses and authentic replica wagons on the journey. Passengers can sign up to ride along, provided they’re willing to dress the part, and take part in the pow-wow each evening of the journey.

The itinerary includes an overnight stay atop Echo Summit and a full day traveling through the American River Canyon, and a free day with a potluck dinner at Fresh Pond.
