High school students can work out for free all summer at Planet Fitness

“There just isn’t anything for kids to do around here.”

The refrain rings a familiar tone for many social media adherents, who might benefit from putting the phones down and taking a look around.

Planet Fitness, located at 125 Leontyne Price Blvd., in downtown Laurel, is doing its part to lay this notion to waste by offering free summer gym memberships to high school students from ages 14-19 from June 1-Aug. 31. Yes, you read that correctly – FREE.

“We are so thrilled to have the High School Summer Pass program back for the fourth year,” said Natalie Kirk, district manager for the ownership group United FP. “High School teens ages 14-19 can work out for free the entire summer!”

The American Heart Association recently found that only 25 percent of teens get the recommended amount of physical activity per day, and this lack of exercise can lead to depression and other mental health issues. So, instead of spending hours and even days in front of a screen, the Planet Fitness Summer Pass will get high school age kids moving at a time when school is out and extracurricular activities are paused.

“Exercise can have a significant, positive impact on teens’ overall wellness,” said Craig Benson, interim CEO at Planet Fitness. “We look forward to welcoming High School Summer Pass participants into our clubs to support them in their health and wellness journeys.”

The pass will include free fitness training from in-club certified trainers and free workout plans designed for high schoolers in the Planet Fitness app.

“We cannot wait to welcome our Laurel community to their inaugural High School Summer Pass,” Kirk said.

Teens under the age of 18 must register with a parent or guardian either in-person at the club or online.

Visit planetfitness.com/summerpass for more information or to register. Early registration is available now through Friday. Registration will also remain open during the summer.
