Catwoman’s Various Depictions in Film Have Drawn Different Reactions
Tim Burton’s Batman Returns and Halle Berry’s Catwoman experienced vastly different receptions, both critically and commercially. Batman Returns, while considered darker and more gothic than its predecessor, was praised for its visuals, performances, particularly Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman, and Danny Elfman’s score. It was a box office success, grossing over $266 million worldwide against a $80 million budget.
Conversely, Catwoman was a critical and commercial failure. Panned for its weak script, nonsensical plot, and over-reliance on special effects, it grossed a mere $82 million worldwide against a $100 million budget. Berry even received a Razzie Award for Worst Actress for her role, which she accepted in person. While Batman Returns is considered a cult classic and a high point in the Batman film franchise, Catwoman is often cited as one of the worst superhero films ever made.
