‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star Sara Ramírez files to divorce estranged husband after 12 years of marriage
“Grey’s Anatomy” alum Sara Ramírez, who has been separated from husband Ryan DeBolt since 2018, has filed for divorce 12 years after the two married.
Ramírez’s Tuesday filing in Los Angeles Superior Court – which lists the name Sara DeBolt as the petitioner and was obtained by USA TODAY Wednesday – states irreconcilable differences as the reason for their request. The estranged couple will split legal costs and the division of their property has been determined by a prenuptial agreement, according to the 48-year-old actor’s filing.
They were married in June 2012 and separated at the start of 2018, Ramírez states.
TMZ was first to report the news. USA TODAY has reached out to Ramírez’s rep for comment.
Ramírez, who played the divisive personality Che Diaz in the “Sex and the City” sequel “And Just Like That…” is a Tony-winning actor who’s best known for starring in “Grey’s Anatomy” for a decade, from 2006 to 2016, as Dr. Callie Torres. As standup comedian Che Diaz, Ramírez received backlash as they were seen as a homewrecker in Miranda Hobbes (portrayed by Cynthia Nixon) and Steve Brady’s marriage.
“As an actor, I have a really healthy boundary around outside opinions. You can’t miss certain things, but I receive it with humor. It’s interesting how real people think these characters are,” Ramírez told USA TODAY last year.
“But my hope is that in Season 2 ‒ just like we embrace the humanity of the women on the show ‒ hopefully we continue to embrace Che Diaz’s humanity. It’s important we remember that LGBTQIA+ people don’t have to be perfect, just like the women don’t have to be perfect. We get to be imperfect, we get to be unlikable, and you still get to root for our humanity.”
Though Che and Miranda explored a relationship, they ultimately broke up in Season 2 of “And Just Like That…” In February, Variety reported that Ramírez would not be returning for Season 3 of the Max show.
