Great Outfits in Fashion History: Angelina Jolie’s Laid-Back Suit at Cannes in 2004

There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.

Angelina Jolie is one of the most enduring style stars. Her looks from the early aughts — when she was most known for roles in “Girl, Interrupted” and “Tomb Raider” — are some of my personal favorites, as they played with (and subverted) notions of feminine and masculine dressing. Her laid-back suit from the “Shrek 2” premiere (?) at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival is a perfect show of this.

Her black pinstriped two-piece had a subtle sheen to it, with tuxedo-like lapels that contrasted with the casualness of the unbuttoned shirt layered beneath. The star kept it rather plain with her accessories, only adding hoop earrings and pointy black heels.

With natural makeup and hair in a loose updo, this look is tonally different from the goddess-like flowy gowns she tended to wear on carpets in the years after. Still, its nonchalance gives it a cool factor that’s quintessential Jolie. Keep scrolling to shop pieces inspired her early-aughts Cannes outfit.
