Gov. Abbott declares Travel and Tourism Week in Texas

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared the week before Memorial Day as Travel and Tourism Week in Texas.

From May 19 to 25, Gov. Abbott said he wants to highlight the Texas travel and tourism industry. In 2023, the Lone Star state saw over 56 million visitors from across the world. The same year, 66 million Texan travelers visited in-state destinations on overnight trips.

“Texas is the premier travel destination in the entire United States, offering more than 250,000 square miles of unforgettable experiences,” Governor Abbott said. “Texas truly has something for everyone. Not only does the travel and tourism industry share the beauty of Texas with people from around the world, but the industry is paramount to the Texas economy. It is a key part of what makes Texas the legend it is today. Travel Texas is under the Governor’s Economic Development & Tourism Office. It partners with convention and visitor bureaus, local chambers of commerce, private travel-related organizations and associations to showcase Texas’ culture, history, landscapes and more.

According to Gov. Abbott’s office, the travel and tourism industry generated $193.8 billion, supported 1.3 million Texas jobs and resulted in $72.9 billion in earnings in 2023.

When it comes to taxes, those industries generated over $9 billion at the state and local level, supporting public sector jobs like firefighters, police officers and teachers.
