Google to lay off at least 100 jobs in its cloud unit
Alphabet will lay off at least 100 employees from several teams in Google’s cloud unit, according to CNBC, citing people familiar with the matter.
Google will lay off cloud staff members in sales, consulting, operations and engineering, the publication reported.
“As we’ve shared before, we continue to evolve our business to meet our customers’ priorities and the significant opportunity ahead,” a Google spokesperson said. “We maintain our commitment to investing in areas that are critical to our business and ensure our long-term success.”
The cuts come amid ongoing layoffs in the company since 2023 as it looks to cut costs. Google announced it would lay off 200 staff members from Google’s “core” teams just last month.
In its April earnings call, Alphabet’s Google Cloud reported revenue growth of nearly 30% to $9.6bn. The company’s operating income totalled $900m.
Google also announced it will lay off hundreds of employees in January as the tech industry battles with a tough economic climate.
Google Cloud and enterprise management cloud company Workday recently announced an extended partnership to implement new GenAI capabilities.
Workday will use Gemini models and Vertex AI to “optimise customers’ business performance, generate powerful business insights, and expedite transaction and closing processes”, Google said.
The tools will “provide developers with AI-powered code generation, troubleshooting and information retrieval to increase the quality and speed of deploying apps on top of the Workday platform”.
“Google to lay off at least 100 jobs in its cloud unit” was originally created and published by Verdict, a GlobalData owned brand.
